Some events stay with you long after the last plate has been served.
Recently, I returned to Tulchan Lodge in Perthshire, a beautiful house where I’ve had the pleasure of cooking on several occasions. This visit was especially meaningful — the family had gathered to celebrate an incredible milestone: 60 years of marriage.

Children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces and relatives had travelled from different places to be together under one roof and honour two people who had shared six decades of life, memories and love.
For this celebration, there were no canapés or appetisers. Instead, the evening focused on a highly personalised dinner service designed around the preferences of every guest at the table.
The challenge was significant.
For 17 guests, I prepared five different starters — catering for vegan, vegetarian, fish and meat — followed by five different main courses and three different desserts. Every dish was made from scratch and cooked by me alone.
When people think of private dining, they often imagine a single menu for everyone. In reality, some of the most memorable events are those where every guest receives exactly what they enjoy eating. It makes for a wonderful experience for the family, but it also takes careful planning, timing and organisation behind the scenes.
One of the tools that helped me deliver the evening was my professional heat lamp system, similar to those used in restaurant kitchens. It let me keep dishes at the right temperature while plating multiple courses, so every guest was served properly.
As the evening went on, the dining room filled with conversation, laughter and stories from across sixty years of marriage. Moments like these remind me that food is only one part of the experience — the real privilege is being invited into these celebrations and helping families create memories together.
After the final dessert was served, the work wasn’t finished. Like every event, the kitchen had to be returned exactly as I found it. Late into the evening I cleaned, organised and deep-cleaned the kitchen before finally loading the van and heading home.

The following day, a lovely WhatsApp message arrived from the family:
Really enjoyed our meal last night, everyone did, thank you for all your hard work.
Messages like that make the long hours worthwhile.
Congratulations again to this wonderful couple on reaching 60 years of marriage. It was an honour to be part of such a special celebration at Tulchan Lodge.
