Private Chef in Dunfermline — A Birthday Dinner Cooked From Scratch

Dining table set with white linen, candles, crystal glasses and fresh roses for a private birthday dinner in Dunfermline

Private Chef Giuseppe Manzoli is a private chef in Scotland who cooks bespoke menus from scratch in clients’ own kitchens — and this September that kitchen was in Dunfermline, Fife, for a birthday dinner for four guests. The evening ran from handmade ravioli with king prawns to crêpes Suzette with ice cream churned on site, with one course that started in the client’s own garden.

This article covers what the birthday menu looked like, how a private chef dinner works in a family home, why everything is cooked from scratch on the night, and what it costs to book a private chef in Dunfermline and across Fife.

What does a private chef birthday dinner look like?

The table was dressed before the guests sat down: white linen, candles, crystal and fresh roses. From that point the hosts had nothing to do. I bring the shopping, cook every course in the client’s own kitchen, serve at the table, and leave the kitchen cleaner than I found it. The people whose celebration it is get to actually be at it.

For this birthday the menu was built around the guests — as every menu is. Most private chefs publish a menu. I don’t. We talk about what you love, what the occasion is, and I build the evening around that — you can see how that works on my tasting menus page.

What was on the menu in Dunfermline?

Dinner opened with homemade bread, followed by handmade ravioli with king prawns, fresh plum tomato and basil — the pasta rolled and filled the same day. The main course was rack of lamb cooked sous vide, served with fondant potatoes cooked slowly in butter, chargrilled courgette and roasted vine tomatoes. The bones came out after the sous vide and went straight into the pan for the jus — a bone on the plate is decoration; a bone in the sauce is flavour.

And here is the other half of that story — how those plates came back from the dining room:

The birthday finale was crêpes Suzette: crêpes made from scratch, filled with a crème brûlée cream, finished in a warm orange sauce and served with ice cream churned on site during dinner. The ice cream machine travels with me.

And then there was the course that never appeared on the menu. The client’s garden had apple trees, so I went out, picked the apples, and baked the family a big tray of apple tarte Tatin to enjoy after the celebration — from the branch to their kitchen in one evening. When people ask what “cooked from scratch” means, it means that.

What did the family say?

The morning after the dinner, this arrived by email — shared here with the family’s permission:

“Thank you doesn’t seem close to enough to say. Tonight was a dream come true. Your food was fantastic, the atmosphere you created was wonderful and we couldn’t be more grateful… An amazing experience! So much appreciated.”

Why cook everything from scratch on the night?

No reheats. No pre-prepped trays. A dinner for four in a home kitchen deserves the same standard as a restaurant kitchen — fresh pasta, sauces started from fresh tomatoes, potatoes given the time fondant potatoes need. Scottish produce. Italian craft. It is more work, and it is the work.

Does Giuseppe cook private dinners across Fife and the rest of Scotland?

Yes. Dunfermline is fifteen minutes from the Forth bridges, and I cook regularly across Fife, Edinburgh and the Lothians, Perthshire, the Highlands and the whole of Scotland — in family homes, self-catering houses, lodges and holiday cottages, for birthdays, anniversaries, hen parties, weddings and multi-day celebration stays.
